Just Listen
by John J. Nauke

Trust in me, oh stars,
I will show you the night.
Listen:

The anger of the Earth
Will be humanity’s final revenge
Upon itself.

Where, I ask, is the promised brother
to lead the way?
And why does the promised sister sit in the kitchen and pout?

Seek us out to our cores
And find a screaming
But triumphant Cain.

Search our heads
And find the Hamlet and the Lear
Of all organs. (But which is more poisonous?)

Come outside sister, come out onto the porch.
See the marigolds sleep in the evening.
Wait for mosquitos with us.

Listen to us speak of old times
That could and never did exist.
Watch us dismiss all society and civilization.

Unless it be on this porch
It cannot and will not exist.
Please sit with us and listen.

Or if not
Please
Just listen from the kitchen.
