of course, her name meant “beautiful”:
the pouting smile with one answer for a million questions
and eyes that skimmed mine with a bittersweet sadness
she was the heroine from my favorite book,
where the adventurer chases
the princess
on camelback
from the end of the page onto the unpublished next chapter
I was a boy who wanted to become a man
for her
no more shaving
some more charming
any more whiskey?
as if she’d believe me sitting at this drugstore refreshment stand in the
middle of a capitol hubbub
dreaming of what can only happen in my imagination
