Scrying moon water and divining stars,
the ancient art of sorcery or insanity
is the black grimoire of your life.
The toxic boil of magic in your eyes–
old fire of brimstone in oil – unravels
in sooty entrails groping for a cure.
In the afterglow,
you examine the extract of oracles,
the pour of portents distilled in glass
and the bell jar offering its ashes.
The roily remains inside
the crucible of your mind
meld into a residue that eclipses
the Black Stone of your heart.
Just a mote in the eye of a petri dish,
it evolves into the promise of light,
an ancient sun, the alchemist’s
ascension into the empyrean realm.
The perfection of gold.
