The Aurora Review Winter 2006

From the River
Kevin Estrada

sailing on a skiff
smooth swells, catfish running
                       the river
berries: boysen, straw, huckle
                  hang along the shore
who’ll pluck ‘em next
        if anyone before
sundown oranging the Earth body
good company
mind the mosquitoes though: they’re hungry
they keep coming at your warmth

raft cracks!
splits the dead trunk
spits me into cold
I remember snakes can swim
keep head above to breathe
much faster downriver now
when was headed up
bites over arms, hives
        Not soothed

still
I paddle quick
        against the current
to where the sun is glowing:
a town with streamers
on highwires
